The King and Queen have invited all the Fairies to be present as godmothers at the christening of their daughter, Princess Pearl. The wicked Fairy has not been invited because no one has seen her for fifty years. Nevertheless she arrives, mortally insulted, just as the other Fairies are presenting their gifts. The wicked Fairy christening gift to Pearl is a curse: one day she will prick her finger on the needle of a spinning wheel and die. Fortunately, the Good Fairy has not yet made her wish. She manages to avert disaster by declaring that Pearl shall not die, but only fall into a deep sleep for a hundred years, from which she will be awakened by the kiss of a Prince.
